UNH Extension: Some tips on saving money on heating this winter. Try lowering your thermostat by a degree. Each degree reduces the cost by about two percent. Adjusting the thermostat from 73 to 68 degrees typically saves about 10 percent in fuel bills. A programable thermostat can do this for you automatically. Having your heating system professionally serviced will save 10 percent on costs. Consider replacing your system with a new Energy Star-qualified heating system if yours is more than 15 years old. Seal air leaks around windows, doors, piping, lighting fixtures, fireplace dampers, attic hatches, bulkhead doors with caulking, weather stripping, insulation, and plastic film to further isolate you home and save on heating bills.
