January 18, 2014

Because there is a special election (District 1Executive Councilor Vote) on Tuesday, the selectmen have moved their regular Wednesday meeting to that day.  They will meet Tuesday at 4:30 pm and not Wednesday. The meeting will be held in Town Hall. The Selectman’s Office will be closed all day.

The Selectmen’s office will be closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King day.  The Clerk’s office will be closed until 3 pm that day.  It will open from 3-5 pm to accept any last minute absentee ballot applications.

There will be two ballots on Tuesday. The Republican ballot will have three names on it as there is a primary there.  There will be only one candidate running on the Democratic ballot.  Please exercise your voting right regardless of which party you support.  The hours are 8 am to 7 pm.

At last Wednesday’s meeting, the question regarding the library was raised once again.  Rob Nadler suggested that Albany residents could use either the Madison or Tamworth libraries.  The cost to use Madison is $20 per family and there is no cost at Tamworth.  Should one of these choices be made, Albany could cancel its agreement with Conway Public library and reimburse Albany residents for their “non-resident card”.  Doing that would be less expensive than what Albany presently pays.  He also expressed the opinion that for Albany to pay at an equalized valuation ignores the fact that Albany has no equity in the library or representation on the Board.  And, he said, if Albany has overpaid for 2013 library fees (based on the number of cards issued to Albany residents) we should seek a refund.  Kathy Vizard has asked the Library Director to implement a voucher system so the towns can have some control of those for whom we are paying.  He said he would take that into consideration. She will also check on the next trustees’ meeting. On another matter, Mike Helmers is working with Jack Rose regarding the finalizing of a noise ordinance to be presented to the residents of Albany.

Gibson Center: The Center will be closed on Monday for Martin Luther King day.  The Care for the Caregiver Support Group meets on January 22.  Belly Dance Classes are held each Thursday at 9 am.

Library: The library is closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King day. Thursday, January 23 at 6:30 pm there will be a special magic show with Norman Ng.  Suggested ages for this free show is 6 and up.

UNH Extension:  Don’t forget the January 25 Cooking for Crowds: A Volunteer’s Guide to Food Safety being held at the River Church, 2600 East Main Street in Conway from 9am to noon.

Memorial Hospital:  A program called “Better Choices, Better Health” is being held at the Visiting Nurse Homecare and Hospice on Route 16 (between Green Granite Conference Center and Dairy Queen) starting Thursday January 23 at 2 pm.  The class size is limited so call Joan Lanoie at 356-5461 ext. 2291 to register as soon as possible. This program is designed to help self-management of chronic health conditions and also to rediscover things you’ve enjoyed doing.  It will help those with chronic conditions build self-confidence, provide further  knowledge regarding their condition, get training and skills to help with the disease or disability and thereby take better care of themselves.  Get tips on coping that will help with participation in life once again.  Learn communication skills, healthier eating, exercise plans, pain management, how to deal with difficult emotions, better breathing skills, making treatment decisions, weight management, better sleeping habits, and how to prevent falls. This workshop will not conflict with any other support groups related to specific chronic health conditions.

Congratulations to Matthew Ashnault on being named to the Dean’s List at Keene State College.

Best wishes to Doris Meyer for a quick recovery from her bout with pneumonia.

Please be very careful when walking outside.  There are many patches of ice and sometimes the sand/salt is not enough to keep you from falling.  Have a great week non-the-less.
