The selectmen will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, August 27 at 4:30pm at Town Hall. The subject is increasing building permit fees. This covers new construction, inspection and renewal fees of permits that have expired. If you plan to build now or in the future, you should attend this meeting.
World Fellowship: Today at 7:30pm excerpts from James Joyce’s Ulysses will be performed by Caraid O’Brien as Molly Bloom, with Aaron Beall as Leopold and our own Andy Davis as the poet Stephen Dedalus. After the performance there will be a Q&A. On Monday at 7:30pm poet Molly Watt’s poetry memoir set in 1963 shows how the political meets the personal in the life of a young family. On Wednesday at 7:30pm Michael Evans of the National Security Archive, a pro-transparency international affairs research institute, discusses investigating human rights violations using access to information laws.
Gibson Center: Call 356-3231 to reserve you seat for the Crescent Beach State Park trip on Tuesday. Pack your own lunch, bring an umbrella (for the sun) and a towel (for after your swim). There’ll be a stop for ice cream on the way home. The bus boards at 9:30am. The AARP Smart Driver Class is on Tuesday from 8:30 to 4pm. Cost to AARP members is $15; all others, $20. Call to make your reservation. The Center’s Crafts and Artisan Festival will be Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Check it out. The Center is closed on Monday, September 1st.
UNH Extension: Interested in growing seeds or breeding your own veggies? Learn about the rewards of growing seeds, steps to becoming more than a seed saver, and more on August 26 at 6pm Remick Farm Museum. The Club Sandwich 4-H Dog Club is looking for new members ages 8-18 to be part of the Sandwich Fair demonstration on Monday, October 13 at 1pm. Kids and their dogs learn and practice agility, Rally Obedience, pet tricks, talents and more. Dogs learn to become good companions while kids learn responsibility. Darby Field Inn is hosting an Art at the Darby Field Inn on September 19 at 6pm. The reception starts at 6pm where appetizers will be served. (This will be a good start to a delicious dinner so make reservations.) The artists presenting their works will be Joyce A. Desmarais (a dear friend and accomplished artist), Elaine M. Visiting Nurse, Home Care and Hospice of Carroll County will hold a benefit event (a butterfly release) on Saturday outside their offices at 3046 White Mountain Highway in North Conway at 10am. To participate, call Visiting Nurses to purchase a butterfly as a memorial or to honor someone.
The Mountain Ear is closing its office in North Conway and heading north where Salmon Press plans to offer a new publication.
Stan and I had a blast from the past this week outside of Hanaford’s. Diane Leonard (her name when she worked in the clerk’s office with Sharon Keefe) has returned to New Hampshire. She has since remarried. She is now a grandma and is back home to be nearer her grandchild. We had a lovely chat and it was good to see an old friend.
Happy belated birthday to Mary Leavitt. The Bald Hill Strollers gave her a lovely party. Seems Mary and I have birthdays in common, as mine is at the end of this coming week.
Amazingly, the summer is nearly ended. September 1 is Labor Day and the Mud Bowl is the end of that week. In the meantime get out and enjoy whatever lovely weather we still have. Have a great week!
