At the July 2 selectmen’s meeting, Steve Solomon, Conway’s Fire Chief, came in to discuss the contract Albany has with the fire department. The discussion was about cost and use. Go to albanytown.org and read the minutes for the entire discussion. There was also discussion regarding road standards for Albany. Curtis is working on development of such a plan.

The Selectmen’s Office will be closed next week as Kathy will be on vacation. There will be no selectmen’s meeting this Wednesday.

World Fellowship: On Sunday, July 13 at 7:30 pm, join local study group leader, Beverly Woods, to learn how to communicate compassionately.

Gibson Center: Call 356-3231 for your seat aboard the bus going to see Tribute Band’s Beach Party Boys on July 15. Every Friday during the summer there’s Tai Chi at 10 am. If you’d like help with your computer, sign up for One to One Computer instruction on Wednesdays by calling the Center. Like poetry? Join Poetry Appreciation classes on Thursdays at 10:15 am. You’ll be reading and writing poetry.

Library: At 6pm on Monday it’s Open Mic Night featuring Bob Demare. On Wednesday at 5:30pm there’s “Cookout in the Park” and at 6pm there’s the “Concert on the Lawn” featuring the Mt. Washington Valley Band.

UNH Ext: July 26 is Farm Day! Among the demonstrations, and there are many, will be a presentation by Jason Ferry of Freedom who will bring his portable sawmill to saw logs into lumber. He will hold a discussion about assessing trees and logs, and grading softwood and hardwood. Another workshop is on making your own maple syrup. Steve Roberge of UNH will cover topics including tree identification and tapping, collecting and boiling sap, and finishing, filtering and packing syrup. The program begins at 11 am. There’s also a workshop on hobby farming conducted by a team of local experts from bee keepers to chicken farmers as well as trained Master Gardeners.

Next Saturday, July 19, is the Annual Albany Picnic (in the Albany Forest). It starts at 11am. There will be hot dogs and burgers as well as items brought by those attending: if your last name begins with N-Z bring a salad and if your last name begins with A-M bring dessert. This is an ideal time to relax, enjoy the company of friends and neighbors and have fun. There will be games for the kids and the availability of a swim in the Swift (no lifeguard on duty though). There will also be a raffle. Come in through the Saco River Ranger Station entrance.

The White Mountain Jewish Film Festival at the Colonial Theatre in Bethlehem opens Thursday, July 17 with a reception (including refreshments) on the patio at 6pm followed at 7:30pm by the movie “Liberty Heights” starring Joe Mantegna Adrien Brody and Bebe Neuwirth.Tickets at the door are $8 per person.

July 26 is the annual Carroll County Farm Day (it’s FREE to all) held at the county complex in Ossipee. Farm Day is a celebration of rural farming with hands-on workshops, demonstrations and activities for farmers and families. The 4-H group will have a petting zoo, bird house building, hands on demonstration of shooting sports and other things for kids. Check the UNH information for other particulars.

July 26 is the Kennett Alumni Summer Outing and Meeting at the Fryeburg Fairgrounds. The social hour is at 5 pm and dinner will be at 6 pm. No need to dress up; casual summer attire is fine. It’s time to renew old friendships and have a good time.

Bernadine Dubois attended her family’s seventeenth annual reunion on July 5 in Whitefield. About 30 people were there. Always wonderful to get together with family.

Carol Munroe recently participated in the “Relay for Life” held in Massachusetts. “Relay” is a fundraiser organized by American Cancer Society to raise money for research toward conquering cancer.

Welcome back to our annual summer residents, Jeff and Michelle Munroe who are at their cottage.

Margie and George Shubley also returned to Bald Hill Road to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend with the Holmes family.

Harold and Dolores Leavitt visited Mary and Arthur Leavitt this past week. They will be visiting other friends and relatives both here and in Massachusetts before they return to Florida. They have just returned from a trip to Alaska where they had a great time.

Congratulations to Matthew Ashault who has been named to the Dean’s List at Keene State College.

Now that the holiday weekend is over, there is not as much traffic around. Time to get out and enjoy the summer. Have a great week!
